“Science in May” with the University of Udine and the Historic Workers’ Mutual Aid and Education Society

Maggio scienza’, the traditional series of talks now in its ninth year, organised by the University of Udine and the Storica Società Operaia di Mutuo Soccorso e Istruzione, returns to Cividale del Friuli. This year, the central theme around which four specific sessions will revolve is ‘Language, communication, disinformation and manipulation. Opportunities and risks in the age of artificial intelligence’. The sessions will take place every Friday, from 7 pm, in the Brosadola Room at the Centro San Francesco (Piazza San Francesco 1). The initiative is coordinated by Gianluca Tell and Maria Cristina Novelli.

It begins on 8 May with “Language to speak, words to heal”. Introduced by Barbara Frossi and Giulia Antoniali, the speakers will be: Davide Anchisi, “Born to speak”, and Silvio Brusaferro, “Words that heal”.

On 15 May, the theme will be ‘The Power of Words’. Following an introduction by Sofia Tell and Paola Guglielmo, there will be presentations by Fabiana Fusco, ‘Language and Power, Language and Discrimination’, and Fulvio Cucchisi, ‘The Language of the Law: Between Stereotypes and Discrimination’.

When technology and photography bring the past to life” is the theme of the event on 22 May. Angela Borzacconi and Mauro Pascolini will introduce the talks by Maria Elena Colombo, “Online media and cultural participation”, and Gianni Pignat, “Tina Modotti and the artificial intelligence of yesteryear”.

The final event, on 29 May, will focus on “How journalism is changing in the age of artificial intelligence”. Luca Carra will speak on the topic, introduced by Maria Cristina Novelli and Lucia Aviani.
