International Day of Women in Mathematics: 30 Years Ago, the University’s First Female Mathematics Graduates

To mark International Women in Mathematics Day, the Department of Mathematical, Computer, and Physical Sciences at the University of Udine is hosting a seminar titled “Matrix Approximation via Random Sampling,” presented by Alice Cortinovis, a researcher in numerical analysis at the University of Pisa.
The event will take place on Tuesday, May 12, at 4:00 p.m. in the auditorium of the Scientific Library at the University of Udine (Via Fausto Schiavi 44, Udine) and is dedicated to highlighting women’s contributions to mathematics. The initiative also marks an important anniversary for the University: thirty years ago, the first three female students graduated with degrees in mathematics.
Following this, the documentary “Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani” will be screened. The film is dedicated to the life and work of the great Iranian mathematician, the first woman to be awarded the Fields Medal in 2014, to whom this day is dedicated. The film is subtitled in Italian.
