World Liver Day

World Liver Day 2026 is April 19.
The motto this year is: “Solid Habits, Strong Liver”

Liver disease is a growing global problem: approximately 1.5 billion people worldwide live with chronic liver disease, resulting in approximately 2 million deaths each year, and up to a third of the global adult population suffering from MASLD (fatty liver disease associated with metabolic dysfunction). These conditions are often silent, and can progress to fibrosis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer if not diagnosed and treated early.

Liver disease is often preventable through healthy lifestyles and regular checkups. There are four main indications:

1. follow a balanced diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats, limiting sugars and ultra-processed foods;

2. practice physical activity regularly, because movement helps reduce liver fat and improve metabolism even without significant weight loss;

3. reduce or avoid alcohol consumption, which remains one of the most effective strategies for preventing liver damage;

4 undergo periodic checks, which are essential for identifying any damage early, especially in those at risk.

The ASUGI Liver Disease Clinic is promoting an initiative aimed at the population of Trieste, Monfalcone, and Gorizia, with free prevention, information, and screening activities, in collaboration with the Giuliano Isontina University Health Authority (ASUGI) (Liver Disease Clinic, Department of Legal Addictions), the Department of Medical, Surgical, and Health Sciences (DSM), the University of Trieste, the Italian Cancer League (LILT), Fondazione Italiana Fegato, and Patient Associations.
