Aneesur Rahman Prize 2026 at Stefano Baroni

We are delighted to announce that the American Physical Society has awarded the prestigious Aneesur Rahman Prize to Prof. Stefano Baroni. Stefano is a Full Professor at SISSA and a research associate at our Institute. The Aneesur Rahman Prize is the highest honor given by the APS in the field of computational physics. The official citation reads:
“For seminal contributions to the development of first-principles methods to investigate the electronic and thermal properties of condensed systems, and for the development and dissemination of open-source software for electronic structure calculations that has been widely adopted.”

Stefano is internationally recognized as an authority in electronic-structure theory of condensed matter and computational physics, and he has been the main driving force behind the Quantum ESPRESSO project, one of the most widely used codes for computing the physical properties of solids. He previously served as Director of the DEMOCRITOS Center at the National Institute for the Physics of Matter, now part of the Istituto Officina dei Materiali (CNR-IOM).

The Director of DSFTM, Stefano Fabris, commented:
“I am deeply pleased with this recognition, which rewards Stefano Baroni’s vision and dedication. He has devoted his career to creating tools and knowledge that have enabled thousands of researchers to use first-principles simulations to study materials and molecules. A pioneer of open science, he has led an extraordinary team that, from SISSA and CNR-IOM, has become a reference scientific community. His work on Quantum ESPRESSO has been crucial for the success of national and European supercomputing strategies, ensuring optimal use of the most advanced technologies. Quantum ESPRESSO is today not only a scientific tool of excellence, but also a training ground for young researchers, to whom Stefano has passed on enthusiasm and rigor.”

“This prize crowns a distinguished career. It is important to highlight the strong connection between Stefano’s work and the Istituto Officina dei Materiali. The Quantum ESPRESSO code is the result of the fruitful collaboration between SISSA and IOM and is a resource of great prestige for the entire scientific community and for our Institute,” said IOM Director Federico Boscherini.
