The challenges of the future will demand more local expertise, particularly in the global South. Building scientific capacity in these regions is not just beneficial—it is essential. This is the core idea behind a recent Nature article by TWAS Executive Director Marcelo Knobel.

Every young person with a curious mind — regardless of gender, geography or socioeconomic status — should have a real chance of becoming a researcher. Science benefits humanity by confronting the world’s environmental, health, technological and social challenges. It should be widely seen as a career to aspire to, a source of pride for families and communities.
Published in June 2025, the editorial also highlights the role of TWAS in fostering global scientific collaboration and capacity-building. It underscores the importance of inclusive science systems that empower researchers from all regions to contribute meaningfully to global progress.
