Applications are now open for the XVIII edition of the School “Synchrotron Radiation: Fundamentals, Methods and Applications – Gilberto Vlaic”, organised by Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste together with the Italian Synchrotron Radiation Society (SILS). The School will take place in Muggia, near Trieste, from 21 September to 1 October 2026.
Designed for PhD students and early-career researchers, the School offers an opportunity to discover how synchrotron and free electron laser techniques can open new perspectives across many different research fields — often in ways young scientists may not yet have imagined. From materials science and energy research to biology, environmental studies, medicine and cultural heritage, synchrotron light has become an essential tool for exploring matter with extraordinary precision.
Through lectures, discussions and direct interaction with experts working at international research facilities, participants will learn how synchrotron radiation and FELs are generated, how they interact with matter, and how these advanced techniques can help answer scientific questions that conventional laboratory instruments cannot easily address.
More than a specialised training course, the School is designed to help young researchers understand when, why and how large-scale facilities can become part of their scientific path — turning curiosity into new experimental opportunities and future collaborations.
