Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste: Giovanni Comelli Appointed President to Lead Elettra 2.0

The appointment comes as the Elettra 2.0 project moves forward at full pace, paving the way for the restart of the machine in 2027 and the activation of new experimental beamlines for international research.

Trieste, 28 May 2026 – On 26 May, the Shareholders’ Assembly appointed Professor Giovanni Comelli as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.p.A., the Italian non-profit research organization that operates one of the world’s most advanced research infrastructures based on synchrotron light and free-electron lasers for the characterization and development of new materials, biomaterials, pharmaceuticals, and chemical and biochemical processes.

Comelli was designated as a member of the new Board of Directors by the Italian Minister of Universities and Research Anna Maria Bernini, who conveyed her best wishes for his new appointment.

Full Professor of Experimental Physics of Matter and Applications at the University of Trieste, author of more than 250 scientific publications and actively involved in numerous national and European research programmes and scientific infrastructures, Comelli has an extensive knowledge of Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste. He served on the Board of Directors from 2005 to 2014, including as Vice President from 2006 to 2014, and returned as Board Member from 2023 to 2026. Throughout his career, he has also held several leading scientific and organizational positions at national and international level, including Director of the Department of Physics at the University of Trieste and member of scientific evaluation and advisory bodies promoted by Italian and European institutions.

The new Board of Directors appointed by the Shareholders is composed of Professor Giovanni Comelli (University of Trieste), Chairman; Professor Anna Gregorio (University of Trieste); Dr Caterina Vozzi (National Research Council – CNR); Professor Giorgio Rossi (University of Milan); and Dr Paolo Valente (Director of the INFN Rome Division).

The new Board of Statutory Auditors, also appointed by the Shareholders, is composed of Dr Gianpaolo Graberi (Chairman), Dr Francesco Battaglia, Dr Sara Rossi, Dr Gabriella Magurano and Dr Pietro Coluzzi as standing auditors, with Dr Vittorio Pella and Dr Paola Rodighiero serving as alternate auditors. Both governing bodies ensure significant continuity with the previous composition, while also welcoming new members with strong scientific, academic and professional expertise.
