Area Science Park has been included in the 2026 Roadmap of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) as a partner in two new strategic research infrastructures for Europe: Microscopy Europe and NFFA2050. This recognition confirms the institution’s role in developing advanced infrastructures that support research and innovation in the field of materials science.
Microscopy Europe is the first distributed European research infrastructure dedicated to advanced electron microscopy for the study of materials at the atomic scale. Area Science Park contributes to the initiative through the expertise of its Laboratory of Electron Microscopy (LAME), taking part in the development of the scientific programme and serving as Italy’s national representative within the European consortium.
NFFA2050 is a digital research infrastructure dedicated to nanoscience and advanced scientific data management, integrating experiments, simulations, and FAIR-based approaches. Area Science Park contributes through its Laboratory of Data Engineering (LADE), providing expertise in data management, interoperability, and the application of artificial intelligence to research workflows, as well as access to the ORFEO high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure.
The inclusion of these two initiatives in the ESFRI Roadmap 2026 marks an important achievement for Area Science Park and highlights the investments made in recent years in electron microscopy, materials science, and research data management. As stated by President Caterina Petrillo, this recognition strengthens the institution’s position within the European strategy for research infrastructures, contributing to the advancement of strategic sectors for both research and industry.
