On Tuesday 9 September 2025, Area Science Park will host the workshop ‘AI in Virology: Leveraging AI to Advance Our Understanding of Viruses’ at the Congress Centre on the Padriciano Campus (Trieste). The event, part of the PRP@CERIC* project, will explore the new perspectives that artificial intelligence brings to virological research, offering increasingly sophisticated tools to analyse viral evolution and gain deeper insights into protein structure and dynamics.
This scientific seminar brings together international experts working at the intersection of artificial intelligence and molecular virology, with the aim of presenting the latest applications of Protein Language Models. These models allow researchers to explore sequence variability, uncover structural diversity, and infer protein function. The workshop will demonstrate how such tools can be applied to predict viral adaptation and support the development of therapeutic strategies, contributing to a more profound understanding of viral mechanisms.
Keynote speakers include:
- David Robertson and Joe Grove – Group Leaders at the Centre for Virus Research, University of Glasgow (UK)
- Francesca Cuturello and Alberto Cazzaniga – Researchers at the Data Engineering Laboratory, Institute for Research in Technological Innovation, Area Science Park (Trieste, Italy)
